Add ?mayor? to Leanne Guier?s name.
Thursday night, her fellow City Council members chose her as the new mayor of the city of Pacific. The vote was unanimous.
?We need to get moving forward,? she said.
Guier, 52, replaced former Mayor Cy Sun, elected in 2011 and recalled last month. Residents voted 949-502 to oust Sun, whose actions pushed the city to the brink of disincorporation late last year. Sun fired various city employees, including police officers, and at one point got himself arrested when he tried to push past officers into a locked city office. He claimed to be fighting corruption, but it was sometimes hard to tell what he meant.
Guier, a resident of Pacific for 17 years and a council member since 2009, said she had pondered a possible run for mayor, but not quite so soon. She figured she might spend another term on the council before trying it. The recall changed that plan.
Late Thursday, she was already working with peers, including Mayor Pro Tem James McMahan, to right the city?s struggling course. Part of that job includes filling vacant positions ? holes in the city?s operations, especially the police force.
?Our number one priority is public safety,? she said. ?It looks like we?re going to go ahead and have some applications to fill spots in the police department. That?s our number one priority.?
Guier also mentioned holes in the city clerk?s office and the finance department.
?These things need to get back on track,? she said.
To those who supported Sun, she offered peace and asked for patience.
?I understand what Cy was trying to do and I understand what his intent was,? she said. ?It was unfortunate that he didn?t seem to understand the process that needed to be followed. What I would say is, give us a chance. I have an open door.?
