House Speaker John Boehner?s Plan B was rejected by members of his own party. He criticized President Barack Obama?s approach to the fiscal cliff negotiations. During his weekly GOP address, the speaker called on the president to deal honestly with the American public with regards to the deadlock. The president was currently on a family holiday vacation in Hawaii.
Most economists believe that the cut on government spending and the tax increase, which is estimated to be around $2,000 per year for an average family, will bring the nation into the second recession during President Obama?s term. Speaker Boehner said that unless the president and Congress take action, tax rates will take effect on everyone on January 1.
Boehner?s Plan B imploded when most conservatives in his own party told him that they can?t support it. Boehner?s proposal would have extended tax cuts for most Americans but would increase the tax rates on those making more than $1 million. Conservatives still described it as a tax increase that they can?t accept.
Some conservative pundits have questioned whether Boehner should continue as the House Speaker. But in Congress, no one from the Republican Party challenged the Ohio Republican openly. Boehner said that he used to run a small business and have seen how higher taxes can damage families and jobs.
Both President Obama and Boehner said they think can reach an agreement before the year ends. The president told White House reporters that members of Congress should use their Christmas break to cool off.
He also indicated that a deal was in the works towards a package that would prevent a tax increase on middle class Americans, lay the framework for further deficit reduction, and protect the unemployment benefits for two million Americans. The president and his family arrived in Hawaii Saturday for a holiday vacation.
